The Last Patrol, formerly known as the Oklahoman DefenceIn-game spelling Force are a ghoulified National Guard remnant in Oklahoma.

Historical background

A remnant of the United States National Guard, The Last Patrol were an Oklahoman National Guard regiment ghoulified from direct exposure to a nuclear blast, patrolling and protecting the communities within the remnants of Oklahoma under their control.[1] After the Great War, they designated themselves as the Oklahoman Defence Force, partnering with civilian emergency services to attempt to rebuild a government, but failed, changing their name after suffering massive losses. By 2275, The Last Patrol are an analogue for the United States of America itself, remnants and ghosts, but fiercely dedicated and adamant about the cause they wish to support, even as a new America rises.[2]

When the bombs fell on Oklahoma, the majority of the National Guard was based in their military base to the West of Tulsa engaged in a massed training exercise. Being a major population centre, Tulsa hit by a nuclear strike, leaving the poor Oklahoma National Guard in something of a horrendous position: too far from the blast to have been killed, but far too close to get out unscathed. Instead most of them withered in the combat armour they were wearing, being transformed by the radiation over many weeks into intelligent ghouls. While they would recover some for of cohesion far too late to help in the immediate aftermath of the blast, the ghouls were filled with a new purpose: defending that which they held. Convinced almost all they encountered were enemies, the Last Patrol became incredibly defensive of their little slice of Oklahoma.

Behind the scenes

  • Zusk created The Last Patrol, seeking to create a nation playing into utilizing Ghoul Infantry as a unit, due to the lack of nation usage.[3]

  1. Development Diary #11 (Dev Diary 11: Welcome to Texas and Oklahoma): "The Last Patrol: a regiment of national guard who were directly exposed to a nuclear blast, and now patrol the region around their compound, fiercely protecting the rights and liberties of the communities under their charge."
  2. Flavor Friday #5 (Flavour Friday 5: Major General Harrison of the Last Patrol)
  3. Unique ghoul nation unit or support unit to make them a bit more distinct from normal nations. The only real difference at the moment is access to ghoul infantry and paratroopers. Which while making complete sense since ghouls are basically just slightly mutated humans, it could be more.
So I propose Feral Ghouls as a unit.
Fast, cheap to produce, expendable unit that would be mostly bad in combat but great at flooding the the line through numbers. Could have small upgrades like mirelurks do that represent adding glowing ones/reavers to the feral ghoul packs.
Supported by canon instances such as Jason Bright and Roy Phillips leading/guiding ferals.
Could also be a support unit, like dogs but deadlier

Zusk: "With the Last Patrol tree, I want to try for a nation that really plays into Ghoul Infantry as a unit: Since we don't actually have any unique focus tree country that focuses on those right now."
