Black Canyon are a tribal raider nation based in the state of Colorado.

Historical background

Black Canyon is made up of former prisoners from Tibbets Prison, having escaped due to ODYSSEUS, the warden artificial intelligence of the prison,[1] melting itself down decades prior. In more recent years, they have since become the dominant power in Colorado, taking power from the Glowbugs.[2][3]

Gameplay

Military

Black Canyon begins with 3 divisions all being Yampan Warrior Bands.

Conscription Law

It is in the nature of raiders to band together into rapidly moving groups to easier ambush caravans and avoid the would be pursuers, it is also in their nature to fight in between themselves for the position of the leader. As such with the increasing size of the group it becomes harder and harder to keep the raiders focused and united.

Behind the scenes

  • Black Canyon is based on the prison of the same name that was to be featured in the cancelled Fallout game Van Buren.
    • Unlike the Black Canyon featured in Van Buren, which contained the 215 Rail Line Powder Gang, the precursor to what would become the Powder Gangers featured in Fallout: New Vegas, Black Canyon in Old World Blues is made up of former prisoners from Tibbets Prison, another Van Buren location, adapted in the mod with a similar, but different, background than its Van Buren depiction.

Zusk: "Its not a pre-war prison.
In OWB lore, its the location of former convicts formally held by ODYSSEUS from Van Buren."

  2. Development Diary #18 (Developer Diary 18: Van Buren's Bounty): "Black Canyon is one of the groups that had to see the most reworks to fit it in narratively. In Van Buren they were essentially the “Powder Gangers”, former NCR prisoners who revolted and became raiders. In Van Buren the NCR’s borders extended up to Dog City!In Old World Blues the raiders of Black Canyon are instead former prisoners of a place known as “Tibbets Prison”, an odd pre-war prison that only within the last few decades has shut down due to its AI warden melting itself down. Black Canyon are one of the stronger groups of Colorado - having taken dominion over the Glowbugs of Boulder."
  3. Pip-Boy Plus/Regions#The Black Canyon: "Black Canyon is a settlement of travelers from Tibbet’sIn-game spelling Prison who have moved north to settle the old Black Canyon facility and make it their home. They protect the Glowbugs of Boulder Dome in an effort to help keep the Hangdogs out of Boulder Dome due to the health risks that Boulder Dome poses to the wasteland.

Black Canyon is a combination of several Van Buren concepts - Van Buren’s original Black Canyon “Powder Gangers”, Fort Abandon and the player-led Hoover Dam town. During Van Buren there were several designs for a sort of “player led” settlement group and in OWB those concepts were merged into Black Canyon ultimately."
