Republic of the Rio Grande

The Republic of the Rio Grande is the remnants of a Pre-War country in the Mexican region.

Historical background

One of the only pre-war countries to remain after the apocalypse, the Republic of the Rio Grande is a hollow shell of its former self. Surviving the collapse in no small part thanks to the American soldiers within its borders deserting to save civilian lives, the Republic redefined itself in order to survive.

With the rise of democracy came many challenges, and a long line of presidents have faithfully served the Republic in order to keep its people safe and happy. Despite this, tensions are running high as the Texan Arms Association continues to grow more and more discontent.

The Pre-War Republic of the Rio Grande was created as a puppet nation in Mexico, controlled by and serving the interests of the United States. Despite this, the nation had strong ties to Mexican defectors.[1] After the Great War, the Republic of the Rio Grande was reformed by an American colonel who stayed to help the nation after the War.[2] In doing this, the Republic of the Rio Grande became a military dictatorship, and remained one until thirty years after the Great War, when it became a full democracy, and has remained one by 2275.[3]

National spirits

The Republic of The Rio Grande starts with two national spirits:

Texan Arms Families
  • Production Efficiency growth: +10.00%
The Republic of the Rio Grande had no arms industry at its inception. Rather than train people for the job, Colonel Griffin recruited experienced Texans from the land he liberated soon after the Great War. This has created a problem in the modern day, as the Texan Arms Association continues to lobby for its own interests, disrupting the process of democracy, and pocketing most of the Republic's wealth for itself.

Tlaloc's Guarantees only protect (a few) Mexican nations from outsiders, but they will not protect the cartels from other Mexican nations!

Dante Guerra People Los Constitucionalistos Yes 64.00% Yes President Dante Guerra has served the Republic of the Rio Grande faithfully for his entire adult life: serving two terms in office. His emphasis on public works and quality of life have won him the hearts of the people, but similarly, his own political blunders have made him enemies within the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate of the Republic. As a populist surrounded by conservatives, lobbyists, and a reformist minority, things are looking grim. His own government's opinion of him is only worsened by his inability to keep the Texan Arms Association in check. Dislikes Caesar's Legion

Valentina Rosado Intellectuals La Iniciativa de Progreso (La Iniciativa) No 11.00% Yes Rosado’s father fled Santa Anna’s grasp to make a living away from automata, but his daughter brought them home at the age of fourteen. He raised her on stories of robots patrolling the wastes: and they fascinated her. At sixteen, Rosado packed her bags and left for one of the T.A.A.’s few robotics factories, working the assembly-line as an apprentice to lesser men. By twenty three she’d had enough of the restrictions placed upon her work, and travelled beyond the Republic’s borders. There, she encountered the Brotherhood of Steel; bartering her genius for knowledge. Valentina aided the Texan Chapter in everything from recovering data, to fixing robots, to breaking into bunkers. She lost her arm to get the Brotherhood inside Fort Hood, and for her sacrifice they saved her life. With the backing of Texas strongest few, a new arm, and unmatched mechanical genius: Rosado intends to change the Republic forever. ---

In 2263, during his first presidential term, Mora was given an impossible task: defeating the Legion. With little more than a disorganised militia in his hands, Mora forged victory from certain defeat with blood, sweat, and pure charisma. With his second term upon him, the beloved hero of the people has but one thing on his mind: the reunification of his lost homeland, Mexico. There will never be another man as capable, and as powerful, as Mora is now: at least that's what he thinks. Only he can gather the people of Mexico together as one, willingly or otherwise. Nothing, not even God, can stand between him and his life's work. Mora will go down in history as the greatest man Mexico ever knew—or die trying. ---

Behind the scenes

  • The Republic of the Rio Grande is based on the real world Republic of the Rio Grande, a nation that was formed in 1840 in protest to the Mexican government under Santa Anna, and was disestablished later that year.
  • The Republic of the Rio Grande originally had a much different Pip-Boy Plus entry,[4] being much shorter and concise than the original entry.[5]
  • The Republic of the Rio Grande was worked on by Faeelin,[6] assisted by design input from Zapdude.[7]

  1. Zapdude: "The Republic of the Rio Grande has strong ties to pre-war mexican defectors, and pre-war America, and sits on uneven ground as to its legitimacy as a "mexican successor state." However, it doesn't claim to be any sort of continuation of either group, instead standing on its own two feet in the atomic age"

  2. Question, why is the Rio Republic considered a pre-war nation? That doesn’t really make much sense since it was made by the American and Mexican soldiers in the area
MrBlazzar: "Actually it was made pre-war when America occupied Mexico
The Post war version was setup by a American general who didn't abandon them when the nukes dropped"

Note: The quote describes the American soldier as a general, however, the Nuclear Rain event states it was a colonel.
  3. Pip-Boy Plus/Regions#The Republic of the Rio Grande: "The Republic of the Rio Grande is a democratic nation founded on the principles of liberty, freedom from oppression, and equality for all. Originally a collection of American occupation troopers and the Mexican nationals under their boot, the early years of the nation were fraught with tension and strife. The R.R.G. was not always a democracy, however, and first existed as a self-imposed military dictatorship. After thirty years of preparation and rebuilding, the dictatorship was phased out for a fully fledged democracy which still functions in 2275."
