The Montana Chapter are a Brotherhood of Steel chapter based in the state of Montana.

Historical background

"Go, Patrocolus, go forth and secure this land for the Brotherhood," the Midwestern hierarchs told him, and so he heeded the call. A new and unwanted arrival to Montana, the Brotherhood came with a mission to secure and dominate the lands for the Brotherhood.

However, there is dissent within the ranks. Some among them, the Sisters of Steel, believe that they have a different role to serve in the future of Montana: as protectors, not conquerors.

Through their focus tree, the Montana Chapter can unlock Advanced Technical Armor, Sophisticated Electronics Tech, Sophisticated Infantry Tech, Sophisticated Air Tech, and Sophisticated Construction Tech. They can also unlock the Plasma Weapons and Vertibird Schematics technologies through their tree; if the Montana Chapter follows the Sisters of Steel Route, they can switch from energy weapon-armed divisions to melee-armed divisions.

Behind the scenes

  • The original Montana Chapter focus tree was created by Faeelin, before being co-opted by Violet.[1] Afterwards, the whole of the nation was given to Violet and Lusa.[2]
    • The Montana Chapter focus tree took over a month to code, and half later had to be restarted due to changes in development. The art and writing for the tree came after the coding was finished.[3]
    • Before their final design, the Montana Chapter was in the position of the Storm Mongers faction, in order to fight the Enclave faster. However, they were moved due to Faeelin raising the point that having the Enclave and Brotherhood fight in the first year of the mod would be unsatisfying.[4]
    • Originally, Faeelin's Montana Chapter was to utilize a generic shared Brotherhood of Steel focus tree that was utilized for the Maxson Chapter and Washington Brotherhood. This generic tree was replaced when Violet and Lusa were given control of the nation,[5] though some of Faeelin's original focuses remain.[6]
    • In addition, the third and final act of the original tree was to focus on the relationship between the victor of the Washington Brotherhood and The Cause, resulting in a war between the Montana and Washington Brotherhoods, and cooperation with The Cause.[7]
  • The 4.0 iteration of the Montana Chapter was created mainly by Violet and Lusa, with assistance from Tar, Aquila, SGucciG, ThatDamnMonkey, Shudderfly, Soviet Cyber, KatW, Aider_Alvin, Scatterman, Alduin, NuclearForest, and Iron Vanguard.[8]
    • The Montana Chapter, while not Violet or Lusa's first nation, was the first nation that the two had worked on to be completed and released.[9]
    • The thematic narrative of the Montana Chapter, as according to the Making The Montana Chapter document: "the strife between family and duty -- of honour and glory -- and what it means to different people." In the narrative, this is reflected by Honour exploring moral and ethical human values without the restriction of being a "Brotherhood of Steel", while Patrolocus explores existential questions combined with a headstrong belief in the ideals of the Brotherhood, as well as the acceptance of suffering.[10]
    • The Sisterhood of Steel are thematically designed to evoke the aesthetic of “medieval fantasy”, through tarot cards and self-imposed restrictions, such as limited energy production and focus on melee weapons.[11]
  • The Sisterhood were originally to visit an unnamed town in search of a missile silo, rather than visiting Fort Verity, having to resolve a family feud quest similar to Red Dead Redemption 2's Assault on Braithwaite Manor. However, it was cut due to being unimpactful in the narrative of Honour's coup, being replaced by the bunker dilemma. In addition, the replacement allowed for the creation and introduction of Johanna, who served as a "rogue sister" and a means of creating immediate conflict between the Sisterhood and the Brotherhood.[12]
  • A cut Sisterhood event written by Violet describes a standoff between Honour and Warwick, in which Honour is armed with a laser rifle, and Warwick a plasma rifle, with the two discussing about who will shoot or put down their gun first, with the situation unresolved in the end.[13]
