Rogue Rangers

The Rogue Rangers is an outcast nation of former and rogue Desert Rangers in the West Coast region.

Historical background

When the Desert Rangers shook hands with the NCR and became a part of the grand governmental machine, there were some who looked upon that merging with contempt in their hearts. Abigail Lee, chief among them, eventually took those who shared her views further into the desert to start anew.

In the wastelands of Nevada, there are many who look to build fortunes or empires and Abigail’s rangers must find a way to pacify them so that they make a new future for themselves free of the NCR. If such a thing is even possible…

"The criminals who came with fear were all too sly. The people they terrorized surely did cry...

The innocent who didn't resist were tolled. Those who did were broken, robbed, and sold...

One day the fort upon the hill received a call. Out came the soldiers to bring them to crawl...

The soldiers did ride, with gun at their side, bolstered by pride, all that stood before them surely died...

And for protecting those strangers, from all of the dangers, they were dubbed the Desert Rangers..."

They used to say that every shadow in Arizona has a Ranger in it, waiting for a reckless drunk or a overly handsy scumbag to cross their path. The people respected the Rangers because the Rangers were the only thing keeping their small communities safe. Evil was able to thrive once the Rangers left for California, letting raiders and armored lunatics galavant from town to town. However, the time for evil and chaos is over. The Rogue Ranger has defeated her foes, both internal and external, and the sheriff has returned to her post. It is time for the dastardly to feel fear once again.

It is said that the Rogue Ranger once tracked Zygore the Hog across 100 miles of open desert just to gut him in front of his followers. The evil that the Rangers face is far bigger and more dangerous than any they have before, but it is the Rogue Ranger's enemies who should be afraid. Across any terrain, through any battle, during any weather, nothing will stand between the Rogue Ranger and justice.

With Snake in charge of the Rangers armed forces, he can finally bring organization back and renew training for their Veteran Rangers. His reforms will shape the Rangers into a elite force surpassing even the NCR Rangers in strength.

Soon the fine men of both the Republic and the Rangers will be marching over the Colorado River and seizing what was taken from them. No matter where you are, the Rangers will lay roots and grow a community that can never be uprooted.

"I was a golden boy back home. Not for the gun-skills I've since grown famous for - I didn't have those yet - but for my talents as a medic, which I learned at my mother's knee, she being the only doctor in town. I learned a heck of a lot more about patching up bullet wounds once I joined the Rangers, but even back then I knew enough meatball surgery that I was always picked to come along on scavenging and hunting trips in case of accident or attack."

Since his elevation to Ranger General, Vargas likes to occasionally take more of a back seat to things, acting as a Dispatcher giving out new missions to Rangers and authorizing field promotions. When he isn't doing either of these things he likes to check in on Rangers in the field and tell them stories of his days back east. And the stories he has to tell are numerous...

'If you could shoot, understand orders, and follow them, that was good enough.'

'I met my future squadmates pretty early in the training program, each with a sillier name than the last - Angela Deth, Hell Razor and Thrasher. Honestly, we didn't get along that well at first.'

'For a while, the four of us just lived the daily grind of the Desert Ranger - scouting and foraging missions, patrolling our territory and checking in on the towns and farms under our protection, but then, way before we were ready, something serious came along. It started as just another patrol, making the rounds to Highpool and Ag Center...'

It might have been boring. There may not have been enough fighting, but that's what real life is like. It might not be interesting, but there's always more to a story than just 'they won and then moved to a new home'.

See description:
"There's no room for men like me in a world of peace… Still I will fight for that world, even if it holds no solitude for us... That world is a better world."

Hell Razor's father was one of the many former raider conscripts into the Rangers in Arizona, bringing his son with him to pursue a more honorable and safer life after his expulsion from his Raider gang, the Hell Raisers. There the Rangers taught him how to survive in the wilderness, how to reason, and how much of a difference a good man could make. But even after all the training, conditioning, and teaching, his father couldn't let go of the rage that had kept him alive in the years before the arrival of the Rangers.

Often being the most brutal on the battlefield and in missions, Quick to choose violence over diplomacy, especially when dealing with Raiders. Some say when confronted with rowdy or guilty raiders, Hell Razor's father would get this look in his eye, like those of Vikings in the Rangers' stories, the face of a mad man bent on the destruction of another with no care for self-preservation in battle; The look of a berserker. Hell Razor's father was renowned for his decimation and brutality of many raider gangs, even scaring some smaller outfits into dispersing or joining up. He became known as The "Hell Raiser" within the rangers. This was obviously not popular amongst his former gang, often targeted for creating the "hell spawn".

The leader saw an opportunity to send a message and establish the Hell Raisers as the worst, most brutal, violent gang around, and what's more badass than killing a Ranger? So they attacked him on one of his probing missions into the Arizona frontier as he camped during the night, Nailing him to the gates of Ranger Citadel after a large-scale Raider assault a week after he was reported missing. They made an example of what happens to Rangers that get too ambitious...Hell Razor was only a young man at the time of his father's murder, but the boy held that same fire of war within him, vowing that he would kill them all and tarnish their name. Revenge is what drove young Razor.

"Thieves often attack at night; they strike when you least expect it and take what you have. They are unassuming, un-prejudiced, and they don't give a damn who you are unless it can net them some more caps. Thieves are dumb. They could be caught by an undercover law keeper or mess with the wrong guy; they are messy and do not cover their tracks. Thieves have no honor and often will die trying to rob some poor bastard on a bad day and get a laser bolt through their brains. Do not be like thieves, men! Brigands, on the other hand, men are the terrors of dark paths through forests and mountains. They make the rich, corrupt old fat fool shiver in his ivory carriage on cold dark nights, even when they are not there. They are one with the shadows and the land around them. They will net more money at night than thieves can make in a day. They will strike terror into the corrupt man and empower the poor man. We may learn many things from the Brigand, men; honor is but one of them."

Hell Razor is known for his dangerous tactics, the famous crusade against the Hell Raisers, and aggressive tactical style. That's what he wants to be known for. It strikes terror in the heart of the enemies of the Rangers and rallies others to his cause for justice… But one thing that only the bravest Rangers under his command know is his hidden tactical genius.

Indeed a terror, many quiet rumors of his ambushes on caravans are murmured, an ordinary trip turned into a living nightmare as he rains fire from his rifle. Many a myth exists around the infamous Hell Razor... Some say he's a million men pretending to be a single man, that he recruited the entire Hell Raiser gang into being his hidden army of justice. Others say that with his magic Zircon Encrusted Razor, he can split himself as many times as he wants...

Those that know him would tell you that he learned these tactics from the stories that his father would read to him of Robin Hood hiding in the forests pilfering what he can from the tax men, of highwaymen fighting the corrupted law in the mountains of western America living off the land, of men clad in leather armor defending his beloved car in the wasteland with his dog. Hell Razor combined the ideals of these stories and what he learned from his dad. The courage to do good no matter the circumstances and the honor brought by protecting those in need shaped Hell Razor into who he is.

"Many of you forget we are just beasts, just as much as the Raider or the Legionnaire, but we are civilized beasts. We care for the weak, protect the innocent, and root out corruption. But there is one thing we share with our uncivilized kin; Our language... No, I'm not talking about English, or whatever slaver scum language the Legion speaks, I'm talking about the one all of God's creation knows, brutality. And if these beasts must speak this language... so shall we, in defense of those that can’t or won’t."

A Ranger to the bone, Razor was raised by them as a group, learning the values fast, he became a Ranger at heart; Championing their values wherever he could, with a tinge of brutality towards all those who would threaten it. Razor is known for his brutal tactics in the field of battle, gaining many names for this style of justice such as "Brigand," "Barbarian," and... "Berserker". These names, while meant as an insult, only serve to empower Razor’s beast of burden mindset.

Becoming known as "Elite Barbarians" these individuals are known for their rampaging across raider territories. Believing that in order for the Rangers of the wastes to fully embody the spirit of justice, they must be not only swift, aggressive, and brutal, but strike fear into the hearts of those that would threaten the peace the Rangers bring with them...

He met few Rangers he could stand, and even fewer he liked. One of these very few were those in his training unit Angela Death, Thrasher, and Snake Vargas, while they didn't get along at first, Hell Razor thought them at first immature and idiots on the battlefield, they all intrigued him by the end of their training. But Snake was the one who intrigued him the most, a healer on the battlefield, and a leader too. An odd combination for a Warrior but an effective one. They were opposites in almost every way, while Razor was quick to choose violence, Snake was just as quick to choose diplomacy. They butted heads as much as opposites would, but they learned from one another and bettered each other too.

Just as iron sharpens iron, these men sharpened each other. Where you found Snake, you were likely to find Razor nearby, they were close and loyal, nearly inseparable; And after Razor returned from his journey to destroy the Hell Raisers, Snake was the first to come to his battered brother sitting beside him during his recovery and preaching his exploits with him after, cementing him in Ranger legend.

A bona fide giant among Rangers, the 6'6 (2 cm shy of two meters), Thrasher has been Snake Vargas' strongest and most powerful team mate by far. He preferred melee combat, the kind of man who brought fists to a knife fight and knives to a gun fight. He was part of the Ranger Team Alpha that invaded Base Cochise and paid dearly for it; He was severely wounded and eventually lost his leg despite treatment. Still, he considers it a bargain, since otherwise he would've been dead before thirty.

While not fit for combat directly, he likes to sit on the radio sometimes to provide advice to field commanders. Often he'll reccomend overperformers to be elevated in the chain of command.

When Thrasher orginally heard that Abigail Lee was headed out into Nevada with a band of Rangers, and that Snake Vargas was not far behind, he followed suit waiting to see what would come of it.

Thrasher at his old age has been around since the roots of the Rangers were first placed down in Nevada, he has been around long enough to witness the good they can do for the wasteland, and he has been around to know what things were like back in Arizona. Thrasher spends a lot of his days writing up detailed maps and reading over old books on strategies. He tries his best to pass off some off his accrued knowledge onto other members of the High Command in the Rangers' military.

Although he might be old and fat, he is still a powerful man. You can tell by looking at him that he could still easily take off his prosthetic leg and beat any young recruit with it.

Death, or victory. One can never be sure which Angela is seeking when in the field. The only thing you can be certain of is that she's going to meet it quickly, bravely, and violently.

But there is also a softer side to Angela, the one that cares deeply about her comrades, and also the friends she made all those years ago.

"Snake was one wild ass son of a bitch back in the day, but I think the weight of his responsibilities has kinda squashed that out of him now. He hasn't been in a decent bar fight in... shit, a decade maybe?"

The stereotype of the rebellious redhead is alive and well in Angela Deth, probably the most famous living Desert Ranger-if she is still alive. Raised in a small, highly religious community, Angela had a falling out with the town elders when she decided that if there was a God, the inherent suffering of the Wasteland meant that God was evil. She left and never looked back, joining the Rangers after waking up in their drunk tank following an all-night bender. The rest is history.

As a member of Ranger Team Alpha, Angela fought her way to glory in the first Cochise conflict. In the years after, she assumed command of Team Alpha from Snake Vargas, and her name became synonymous with the Desert Rangers. If you were on the side of the angels, she was an angel of salvation. If you were a devil, she gave you death. Eventually she was forced to leave Arizona behind along with a lot of the Rangers, but she will always have her memories of the times she had there and the people she left behind.

When the Ranger Unification Treaty was signed she joined up with the NCR Rangers thinking that she had some debt to repay for being given a second chance. And when Snake said he was leaving to go settle a score with an upstart bunch of rowdy Rangers in Nevada, she bit her tongue, knowing that she might lose yet another one who was so close to her.

But eventually she received the news that Snake Vargas won out in a chance duel, becoming Ranger General of that rowdy group, and renegotiating the terms of the Unification Treaty. Now Angela has the chance to be part of the team that made history all those years ago once again.

Angela is not a woman known for fear, apprehension, and sadness about death; unless, of course, you ask her about Ace.

Ace is the name of Angela's late partner, a skilled mechanic, demolitions man, and lover. (One would have to be, to tame such a wild spirit as the Angel of Death.)

He was killed on his last mission before retirement, a supposedly routine job to attach repeater units to major antennas in Arizona. He went alone, and he never came back.

Angela carries on his memory in many ways, not the least of which being some of that mechanical expertise she picked up from him while he was alive.

Among the skull tattoos that cover Angela's arms, there is a single heart, and within that heart, a single name, "Ace".

An imposing figure, who’s always one step ahead. He’d arrived at the citadel one day, clutching a fistful of bounty papers, and a bag of wanted heads, which he traded for a position in Ranger high command. Typically reserved and mild mannered, he’s prone to bouts of rage regarding the unpredictable. A cunning tactician, his skills regarding prediction and effective reaction made him a valuable asset.

For some, enough was enough. All his wrath brought was more destruction, a clear disrespect to the core values of the Rangers. A plan had been raised by a collective within the Rangers, to depose and kill Anderson in his sleep. The plot ended with the disappearance of every conspirator the night prior to the attack. The rest of high command decided to keep him, wisely choosing him as their friend, rather than foe. Soon enough however, with the separation of the Rangers he would become their enemy nonetheless.

Koal Morales is a skilled tactician with a devotion to destruction. Within just a month of serving the Rangers, he’d already lost both legs to a landmine. He remained back at the citadel, studying what had taken his walk away. Once he was field ready again (fit with a shiny new pair of prosthetic legs), he led a campaign of establishing minefields, trapping buildings, and making molotov cocktails, all to be used within raider territory. This scheme ran for years, proving its worthwhileness every day.

When the NCR pressed its influence on the Rangers, the organization’s fracture had Koal Morales deciding the NCR-Rangers was a better fit. Fundamentally, they were more powerful, and practiced more traditional Ranger values. The fracturing of organizations coincided with the promotion of Morales to a member of army high command. Yet, it seemed the NCR hadn’t known the main facet of his strategy, when they deemed the use of firebombs and unmarked minefields a war crime.

What had been the backbone of his strategy, had been barred from him to use. To Morales’s eyes, this was just the first sign of the NCR overstepping their boundary. The next night, he packed his things, and made way for the true Rangers.

Rusty Shackleford lived in Texas for most of his life, and was raised on the belief that Texas was the greatest place left in the world. He was a member of the Texas Rangers, an organization around since the 19th century. He would also see their destruction at the hands of Attis’ army. Once the Rangers were gone, he left on a ship to California, hoping to start a new life in San Francisco. He would find the Shi’s technology and culture overwhelming, when again he left hoping to start a new life. He would find the Rangers and join them, telling them of his time serving in Texas. His stories of having all he knew destroyed by an unknown threat were all too familiar to the Rangers, having seen the rise and fall of the Master and Enclave. People found him amusing, and began imitating his accent and style.

Support for him grew to a point where Texas Company was formed, with Rusty Shackleford at the center. Over time, Texas Company grew in recognition, their flashy persona making them celebrities within the NCR. It’d turned from a real group of hardened soldiers, into a traveling act around California. Despite their great reception, Ranger high command were not happy. They were starting to make the Rangers look like a joke, and it was decided to dissolve the company and reassign all its men to different posts.

Texas Company became just a memory, and with no hope of it ever returning again, its Rangers set down their ten gallon hats for good. Randy Shackleford was given hope once again, when he was told that Texas Company would return, under the banner of the Rogue Rangers.

And we'll keep on fighting
For there's wrongs to be righting
And our victories grow year by year
Cause despite all the dangers
The old Desert Rangers
Well the world knows that we persevere

Yes, the Rangers abide!
We fight side by side!
Through darkness and chaos and fear
From the dawn of Year Zero
The world's needed heroes
So the Rangers must still persevere.

From the Texas Rangers, to the Arizona Rangers, to the Desert Rangers, to the NCR Rangers, to the Nevada Rangers a Ranger does what's right. The cause is what inspires the Ranger and they use what's avalible to them to always get the job done.

But it's important to know something else, that no Ranger who dies in the line of duty will ever be forgotten, nor will they have ever died in vain... or unavenged.

See description:
"A Ranger’s training isn't simply the matter of teaching them how to survive... it's about giving them the skills required to make things better for innocent folks... Well it used to be at least."

For Tycho Sr. Jr. being a Ranger wasn't a choice, it was the family business, from his father to his father's father, all the way back to the days of the Texas Rangers, each of them living by the rifle for the sake of saving innocents and stamping out corruption. Dying by it just as they had lived was often the fate of these brave men. Tycho, the legendary Ranger, hoped to break this cycle for his son, leaving his home of Nevada permanently with a fellow traveling companion, a Follower who believed that doing good is the greatest gift life has to offer, to the newly expanded territories of Arizona. Helping establish the original Ranger Citadel, and secure the frontier of Arizona.

Bringing 'justice and safety' to all those who wished for it, the Citadel grew into not only a strong military base but a prosperous town, one that Tycho and his family could call home. For all that was the beacon of hope and justice in the wasteland the Rangers came to be at the time, they were no match for a growing cancer on Arizona called the 'Legion', the opposite of what the Rangers stood for in every way, they slaved, they assimilated, they killed all who opposed them and they were coming for the Rangers.

Tycho was long gone by the time they had appeared, he had already put his roots down and broke the family curse of dying by the gun. Senior himself was a newly single parent of his infant son when the Legion became a threat to the unprepared law keepers. He as well as all of the Rangers had grown complacent in the peace that his father had fought for, losing much of their territory in northern Nevada. The Legion grew fast to their east, while they only grew weaker, and weak than they were when the Legion arrived. Their numbers endless, their will unbreakable, they slaughtered the Rangers and burned their citadel. Senior blames himself for this, after all, it was he who fled with his son when Caesar came with his Legion.

Upon the revealing of the potential treaty with the New California Republic, it was Senior's speech that swayed many of the Rangers into supporting the unification, as he trained either with or trained them himself, it didn't hurt that his father was a legend aswell. Throughout his campaign, he could hear his father's speeches on corruption, and how deals with the devil are still just that; deals with the devil. The Unification Treaty was made to save the lives of the rangers and their families, and it did just that, the New California Republic, although corrupt, is the best hope for a just, safe wasteland. One in which the Rangers have a chance to survive against Caesar.

But for this he was labeled a coward amongst those that were against unification, claiming that he was too scared to fight the Legion. The sad truth is that he was too scared. He had already watched his life burn once, and he saved what was most important to him, he could not guarantee that he could do it again. But the Rangers were still his responsibility.

When Abigail announced that she and others in disagreement with the unification were heading back out east to Nevada, Senior knew he had to join them, it was his duty to preserve the rangers, whatever form they may take and although he is not well respected amongst his peers for his position on the treaty, he is still a damn good drill sergeant, coward or not. So now he spends his days training recruits, developing tactics, and trying to pass down the Ranger values to his son, even though he may not entirely believe in them himself anymore. He looks forward to exploring the birthplace of his father with his son.

After all, there's still some good to be done before he dies...

"A good leader can make any idiot with a gun, a proficient idiot with a gun."

Never much of a fighter, but a mind made for war, Dexter Cunningham shows all the qualities a Ranger strives for, most prominently cunning. Having been an early graduate of the Ranger Academy, Dexter Cunningham was tasked by Hell Razor himself to clear out an underground slaving operation being conducted in Klamath. Upon arriving with a team of four others, they conducted a search and found the base of operations to be the old Ra’at cave.

Once cleared out by the Chosen One, it’d become a hub for one of the worst slaving operations California had seen. Throughout the next coming weeks a plan was made, they soon posted a sniper, laid a few traps, and went to work. The waning hours of the night were filled with the ringing of gunfire, and the shrieking howls of slavers. The Rangers were victorious, the pens were emptied, and the slaves were brought back to their families.

The plan had been created by Cunningham himself, and because of that he was awarded the most for his work. Once the Rangers had divided, he’d be personally asked by the Rogue Ranger herself to join them, which he accepted most graciously.

Henry Dundy is the kind of person that you just know, no matter what happens, they’re going to make it. For years he’d served at inconsequential outposts and stations. That all changed when he was sent off to Phoenix, Arizona to reinforce the city's Ranger garrison. Upon arrival the city was under siege. Mortar fire slammed against the ancient buildings, sending them tumbling down the busy streets below. While the Rangers tried to aid the citizens escape, the Legion made their first movement into the city. The shelling continued, and the Legion had begun setting up sandbags and carts in intersections and alleys. Assessing the situation, the Rangers knew it was hopeless, but they set up in fallen buildings waiting for another advance.

Once the Legion started their second march, the Rangers opened fire. The Legion battalions’ organization had completely fallen apart in the shock, and they were sent back running every which way through the city streets. A new team of them tried to rush the Ranger’s position, but failed again. This pattern continued a couple more times until half of the Legion’s invasion force began to rush down the position. The Rangers were forced into retreat, half of them dying in the race back.

Phoenix then became just another piece of the growing empire of the Legion, and what remained of the Arizona Rangers became the Cowboy Country. Henry Dundy then retired from the Rangers, only returning when he was asked to join the Rogue Rangers.

It just so happens that being the local drunkard meant Hershel knew a bit about everybody and had built up little ill will amongst the rangers beyond a few unwelcome offers to a 'late night rendezvous'.

So, when the search for a diplomatic 'lets-all-get-along' type concluded, there were no better candidates than boozy ol' Herschel Smith.

His office is constantly draped in a thin coat of disorder with both his desk and the floor covered in papers, his furniture always situated at strange and uncomfortable angles, and his terminal filled to the brim with little files full of nonsense typed while intoxicated.

Unsurprisingly, the only well kept thing in his life is his liquor cabinet.

Ashbourne is, in every sense of the word, a gun nut. He can take apart an assault carbine with his eyes closed, install a caliber conversion sleeve with one hand, and put together a service rifle's bolt assembly with just his mouth.

Stories differ on where he picked up this obsession, even his; maybe it was that his late father's parting gift was a nine millimeter handgun, maybe it was when he realized the raw power at his fingertips after he fired a minigun for the first time. Unfounded rumors claim he paid a prostitute with a bullet, and the experience crossed his wires the wrong way.

Whatever it is, it's turned the man into a living weapons encyclopedia, a skill whitch brings with it lots of insight as to how weapons ought to be made and how arms factories ought to be built.

Randy Aldgate began life glowing, sick with radiation poisoning. The story of his onset struggle for life would become his favorite tale to spin, with each iteration a little bolder than the last. Having been born into the Rangers, he’d been surrounded by the bravest and most fearsome warriors the wasteland had to offer, and often the most braggadocious. The stories of raids against slavers, battling deathclaws, and scouting out Enclave patrols exercised young Aldgate’s mind. He took up writing, and soon had his own book printed at the NCR’s presses. The 114 page 'New Adventures in the Old West' did wonders for the popularity of the Rangers.

New recruits began flooding in, asking when they get to kill their first deathclaw, or stomp out some secret enclave bunker. Randy Aldgate became the head of public relations for the Rangers, and also the most outspoken critic of NCR-Ranger unification. In his eyes, the NCR was too soft, and would only limit the Rangers ability to fight the wasteland’s evils.

None of which mattered in the end, and with the formation of the Rogue Rangers, Aldgate left with them. Having lost a majority of their previous manpower, Aldgate would step up as the recruiter for what’s left of the Rangers.

"In the wasteland, there is no such thing as a fair fight. It is a fight to the finish, and only the fittest will prevail."

Raised in the remnant of Bunkerville, Nevada, Patrick Fitzpatrick was the fourth son of a family of gecko trappers. Being the smallest of his family, his role was to oversee the maintenance and upkeep of the various tools and weapons needed for the hunt. Day through dusk spears were fitted and cages tooled. Through their sale, these craftings made a name for the Fitzpatricks, but Nevada is no place to become recognized. On one usual hunt, a gang of raiders appeared and decimated the family save for Patrick, who remained oblivious at home. Eventually the Rangers showed, and took Patrick into their ranks.

Deemed unfit for service, he proved more useful back at the base than on the battlefield. Being initially set for rifle cleaning, the job was completed within a week. Soon enough every firearm within the Rangers arsenal wound up spotless. Leaving every other quartermaster with an empty workload, he’d subsequently be promoted as the head of the whole department.

As long as something needs done for the Rangers, no matter what they call themselves, he’ll be there.

As far back as the rebuilding of civilization, a system of decentralized and localized levying of troops contained to individual settlements have served us well in every conflict until now. While not effective on a strategical scale, the recruitment of officers and building of regional training bases let us leave soldiers relatively close to home, boosting moral as well as civilian manpower.

With the constantly emerging threat of the wasteland and neighbouring nations, it would do us well to reform our army into something more strategically sound. Investing even more into our organization is a sound decision, considering the state of the wasteland. Forcing a conscription onto our population might make a lot of people very unhappy, but it is sadly a decision we will have to take to prepare properly. Extending the conscription to a four year rotation will considerably increase our available manpower, but with it comes consequences. Are we to leave ourselves perish, are we not to rage against our fate until the bitter end? Already, the forced conscriptions and training leave kind-hearted people into empty shells. Our nation might never forgive us. Our citizens will hate us, our officers will resent us, and our culture might never recover fully.
