Lanius's Cohort

From Old World Blues Wiki

Lanius's Cohort is a subsidiary of Caesar's Legion found in the East near Texas. Lead by The Beast of the East, Legate Lanius, it is one of the starting major powers in the game and the second biggest power in the East (only behind the Texan Brotherhood in size, manpower, and industry). Just like Caesar's Legion, they serve as the primary antagonist in the Eastern portion of the map, all under the orders of Caesar. However, they have the potential to not only achieve the goals of both Caesar and Lanius, but can go their own way, forming a new empire in the East and changing the course of the game if desired.

Historical background

Lanius served Caesar well in the conquests of Arizona, but Caesar has given him a sacred task. Lanius will conquer the East! He shall march against New Mexico, Colorado, and, perhaps, Texas. And when it is over, he shall weep, for there are no more worlds to conquer.

Until Caesar calls him west, to test the strength of the East against the Wall of the west.

Conscription Law

Countries belonging to the Legion (Caesar and Lanius) follow a stricter recruitment policy (for example not allowing women into the military) and as such have lover ammounts of manpower but their individual soldiers are stronger. With higher levels of conscription laws this however gets negated by increasing ammounts of at first unsuitable recruits joining the military, but never gets crippling to the economy.

Recruiting exclusively from our subjugated tribes offer many benefits to The Legion. Tribals are notorious for their warrior spirit and courageous soldiers, which will increase our effectiveness in battle. Recruiting only from tribals will also mean that our army is commanded by their own, as warchiefs and other high-ranks will command the rank and file.

In addition our tribal forces, we can pay for and integrate a large amount of mercenaries in high-ranking officer positions and rank and files with only minimal impact on our army structure, improving our manpower pool without diminishing the warrior spirit of our forces to an extensive degree.

Engaging in a widespread recruitment campaign targeting the settlers in our land will bring in considerable amount of wide-eyed recruit, willing to either die for or get paid by us. Such a huge number of non-tribal recruits in addition to mercenary forces is sure to diminish the organization of our army, as well as breeding discontent in the still mostly tribal rank and file.

As the Bull rises, we require more and more men to fuel our conquests. Conscripting settlers to our cause in addition to our other efforts will provide us with just the right amount of soldiers to continue our conquests, but it is sure to deeply shake the structure of our army. Conscripts make for poor soldiers, and they require more training than volunteer. A conscription order is also sure to turn some of the people against us.

The obliteration of culture is one of the Legion's strongest tools at its behest. Settlers, traders, mercenaries and raiders - they all are moulded into the model of the Legion just as the Romans did to Gaul. We will remake the wasteland into our very image - and with it? We will have a army of loyal soldiers willing to die for our cause.
Requirements

Production

Lanius's Cohort starts with the following production:

  • Motor Chariots (3 arms workshops)
  • Makeshift Squad Automatic Weapon (3 arms workshops)
  • Basic Melee Weaponry (3 arms workshops)
  • Tribal Scout Kit (1 arms workshop)
  • Anti-tank Rifles (1 arms workshop)

These all begin at the base production efficiency cap of 35%.

The Denarius (silver), which bears an image of a younger on the obverse and Caesar, Joshua Graham and Calhoun on the reverse. The inscriptions are in Latin, "Caesar Dictator" meaning "Dictator Caesar" or "Absolute Ruler Caesar" on the front and "Magnum Chasma" meaning "Great Abyss" or "Great Fissure" on the back, referring to the Grand Canyon. The symbolism is simple - the denarius commemorates young Caesar's journey to the Canyon and his first victories as a dictator of the tribe.

Caesar's Orders

Four months ago, Caesar summoned Lanius to appear within his tent-citadel at Flagstaff. There, he gave an important order to the renowned Legate. "Lanius, I need you to take Dog City. I'm going to need the wealth that Denver has to offer if I am to cross the Colorado and take the dam. I'm going to entrust you with a handful of cohorts and trust that in five years, you will accomplish this mission. Take any longer and I am going to consider you a failure and mark you for death as anyone who has failed me would. Show those profligates no mercy."

The Beast in the East

Some fear Lanius, but others know that his coming will save them, and set their people free in ways they cannot see. His victories are swift and honest, purchased with blood. Each victory provides Lanius with Glory, which rallies warriors to his cause, gains him aid from Flagstaff, or makes the merchants of Texas send him tribute.

Behind the scenes

  • Lanius's Cohort was worked on by Faeelin,[1] specifically during the 3.0 update. During 3.2, Zusk redesigned Lanius's Cohort, replacing its focus tree in order to polish and refine it.[2]

  1. Soleful Phoenix: "For my first question, what nations have you created, or otherwise worked on/contributed to?"
Faeelin: "Heya! I worked on Aztlan, RRG, Tlaloc's kids, Legion, Lanius, White Legs, Eighties to date"- Obtained from Discord, 11/4/2021
  2. Sole Survivor: "Good to know! As a quick addition to my first question, what separates the full nation redesigns from the partial redesigns?"
Zusk: "Troll Warren and Lanius's Cohort had most of their focus trees entirely replaced in those respective updates in order to be polished and refined. While the New Vegas and Brotherhood reworks were mostly just some rebalancing and changes to one or two focus tree branches, while leaving most of the respective trees recognizable."
