Western Brotherhood

From Old World Blues Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

The Western Brotherhood, also known as the Lost Hills Brotherhood, was the main Brotherhood of Steel chapter, headquartered in Southern California. They have since been replaced by Lost Hills as of Old World Blues patch 4.0.

Historical background

Their resounding victory over the Enclave at Navarro gave the Brotherhood much to celebrate, but the following years were punishing. Jeremy Maxson died suddenly, and his successor Jonathan Maxson was killed in action. The next Maxson had been sent east to D.C., and so the Elders were forced to choose one of their own. Mari Törni, a Navarro veteran, was chosen to lead.

Brotherhood operations remain the same: discover tech, steal tech, kill those who disagree. They're expanding their sphere of influence to include the Shi, the Mojave Chapter, and Arroyo. The NCR watches with caution.

National Focuses

The Western Brotherhood national focus tree can be divided into eight branches and one sub-branch:

Justice Branch
This branch allows the Western Brotherhood to determine their starting ideological, political, and economic focuses through resulting events, eventually unlocking the other branches of the nation.
  • Old America Sub-branch
The miscellaneous national focuses of the Western Brotherhood, focusing on the relationships between the Western Brotherhood and a potentially victorious Mojave Chapter, and a subjugated or allied Arroyo.
Underground Hangars/San-Francisco Harbour Branch
The Air technology and Naval technology branches. Both focus on increasing the Western Brotherhood's doctrine and technological abilities in their respective paths, as well as constructing infrastructure to support them.
Internal Restructuring Branch
The Outsider Recruitment branch. It focuses on restructuring the Western Brotherhood to not only accept outsiders, but also improve their production and encryption skills, culminating in the Western Brotherhood being able to send volunteer forces.
Navarro or Nothing/Old Bonds/Demand the Bay Branch
The New California Republic War branch. It focuses on either making peace and eventually partnering with the New California Republic and joining them in their battle against Caesar's Legion, reigniting the war between the NCR and Brotherhood, or simply demanding a portion of the San Francisco bay from the NCR in exchange for not declaring war on them.
Our Might Branch
The Power Armor, political power, and Division improvement branch.
Steel Rain/Re-establish the San Francisco Chapter Branch
The Shi branch, determining if all their states are cored once under Western Brotherhood control, or are incorporated as an allied faction, introducing advanced technologies for the Brotherhood.
Blueprint Recovery Branch
The doctrine and national spirit branch, providing various bonuses and boosts.
Secure Equipment Branch
A potential New California collaboration branch, offering partnership with the Desert Rangers, creating buildings and infrastructure in the California area, building up Lost Hills, Maxson, and exploring Navarro.

Gameplay

Military

The Western Brotherhood of Steel begins with fourteen divisions, six Brotherhood Paladins composed of power armored veterans of the brotherhood from Lost Hills to Navarro, and eight Brotherhood Knights.

Conscription Law

Brotherhood of Steel Chapters follow strict caste systems allowing only the wasteland famous Paladins to serve in combat. However some Chapters are not as codex compliant allowing Knights, Scribes, and even Initiates to serve in battle for the Brotherhood. Thought even with compliance to the codex some chapters may elect to allow those not of the Paladins to fight when the need arises.

The wasteland is an extremely harsh place. Not only will our external forces have to face raiders and mutants but also pockets of radiation, little to no food or water, and constant risk of debris in urban zones. As such, we will decide to only deploy the best of the best in this harsh place. Only the famous paladins, the highest rank our soldiers can achieve will be deployed. They shall be the brotherhood's sword, as well as its shield.

  • Division Attack: +4.0%
  • Division Defense: +4.0%
  • Research Speed: +5.00%
  • Special Forces Minimum Capacity: +60
As the need to project our power throughout the wasteland makes itself know, we have to compromise more and more. One cannot efficiently control vast pockets with soldiers requiring years of experience before they are deployed. Allowing senior knights, distinguished soldiers barely a rank below paladins, to deploy with them as support will bolster our troops, and still only allow the best into the wasteland.

  • Division Defense: +3.0%
  • Research Speed: +5.00%
  • Special Forces Minimum Capacity: +60
With senior knights still taking a vast amount of training to deploy, and them being few in numbers in our already small manpower pool, we should consider allowing proven knights to deploy alongside higher ranks. Knights are still battle-proven soldiers, having earned not only their rank but the best weapon we can give them. Deploying them will come to the detriment of the effectiveness of our forces, but doing so will let us have many more units ready to defend the Brotherhood.

  • Division Attack: +1.0%
  • Division Defense: +1.0%
  • Special Forces Minimum Capacity: +40
The need for troops is overwhelming. We cannot sustain our military occupation and campaigns with only proven soldiers coming from our bunkers. Scribes are competent technicians eager to help our cause, and we can deploy them as rank and file soldiers, protected by knights and paladins. But this will mean they will not be safe in the bunker, studying technology. Deploying our scientist on the battlefield is also sure to make some of our citizens lose faith in our cause.

Initiates are a numerous group of recruits that still need a lot of training before becoming knights. In case of extreme danger, we can decide to deploy them before they achieve that rank. Doing so means we can get troops necessitating little in terms of training, and would considerably increase the size of our army. But it will also mean sending untrained recruits in the wasteland, which is sure to turn away a number of citizens from our cause. Care is to be taken, as this decision is not done lightly.

Starting Position

The Western Brotherhood are located west of NCR, with the Shi to the north of their primary California holdings. From their exclave of Navarro, the Western Brotherhood borders only NCR.

Behind the scenes

  • The Western Brotherhood was created by AntoniusMagnus and Oleg, being one of the mod's longest-lived focus trees, and upkept from its creation until 4.0 by MrBlazzar.
    • As Old World Blues originally started in 2265, as opposed to 2275, the Western Brotherhood were set up in a position to reflect their power and territory during that time, due to fighting an earlier version of the New California Republic-Brotherhood of Steel War, being a partial analogue to the Hearts of Iron IV depiction of Germany conquering Czechoslovakia.[1]
  • Before the 3.3.6 Update, the Western Brotherhood flag faced the opposite direction.
  • The Western Brotherhood was one of the nations reworked in the 4.0 update, being redesigned by Zusk.[2] Garnithor assisted Zusk in this effort.[3]
