Behind the scenes
- Zusk worked on the Unity of Austin in the 3.0 update.[3] The focus of the Unity of Austin, from a narrative perspective, was to explore elements seen in the cancelled game, Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel 2, although less reliant on Reese, a character from the game who was to play into the group in-game.[4]
- As the Unity of Austin, Ironmongers, and Shale's Army are all splinter factions of the Master's former Unity, they have flags reflecting their heritage, based off the flag of the Unity's public face: The Children of the Cathedral.[5]

- ↑ Development Diary #24 (Developer Diary 24: Attis's Legacy!): "The first person we will be talking about is the elected Mayor of Austin himself, Keats! Keats has embraced the foundations of democracy, “humanoid” rights, private ownership and capital enterprise. By embracing this more libertarian view on the Master’s Unity, Keats has made great strides in evolving the city of Austin from a series of blasted ruins into one of the greatest and most profitable cities in Texas, all to achieve his goal of joining the Texan Economic Union alongside the Brotherhood of Steel and the city state of Lonestar.
Keats hopes for a beneficial relationship between Super Mutants and Man, embracing a form of voluntary FEV mutation to create more mutants instead of the forced mutation of "other groups"." - ↑ Development Diary #11 (Dev Diary 11: Welcome to Texas and Oklahoma): "Unity of Austin: led by Keats, the ever charismatic super mutant politician and every man, the Unity of Austin is a staunch ally of the Brotherhood, seeking to create a Wasteland in which mutants and humans live side by side through mutual cooperation."

I've read and documented the Dev Diaries for some of the 3.0 factions, but what would you say you were going for, in narrative and tactical terms, when it came to deviating from how BoS 2 was to present its factions, and your redesigns in 3.0?"
Zusk: "It depends on the country really!
With Shale, I really wanted to retell the story of Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel through Shale's eyes. Shale going through Attis's steps in the same way the player is.
With Juggernaut, I explore the fanon side of OWB, having a fanon-inspired Super Mutant faction primairly interact with the fanon in the mod - Mexico.
With Keats, I primairly focused on painting some elements that would have been seen in Brotherhood of Steel 2, although it wasn't really about Reese in the same way Shale's tree was about Attis.
Really, I think the difference between how we reflected Reese and Attis is that Attis is a much more fleshed out character then Reese. We don't really hear his character reasoning for why he did what he did, so its hard to make a faithful narrative based on his story.
We tried to make it important, mind you. After all - the center of the Super Mutant conflict is the settlement of Eden and Reese's jungle, being guarded by the player character from Brotherhood of Steel 2 in a attempt to protect humanity from the perils there. But its less so then with Shale's story because we could more just focus on talking about what Reese did, rather then Why"

they’re all Super Mutants, and have essentially derivatives of that “idea”"
